The Lawfare Institute—publisher of information and insight at the intersection of national security, law, and policy—seeks a highly experienced, energetic, creative and motivated full-time managing editor based in Washington, DC.

The managing editor will report to and support the executive editor and editor-in-chief on all editorial duties. Responsibilities of the role include: 

  • Managing submissions process:
    • Monitoring and responding to all submissions and inquiries;
    • Reviewing submissions for possible publication on the Lawfare website;
    • Consulting expert reviewers or senior editors to evaluate submissions;
    • Processing accepted submissions to prepare them for publication;
  • Managing editing process and workflow:
    • Assigning submissions to associate editors and interns for editing;
    • Managing final copyediting and posting of publications to the website;
  • Maintaining the Lawfare publication schedule;
  • Select editing, including of time-sensitive or high-profile articles;
  • Soliciting submissions from contributors based on current developments and perceived gaps in Lawfare's coverage;
  • In coordination with the Executive Editor, managing a team of associate editors and interns;
  • In coordination with our Digital Media Director, managing the website, including rotating highlighted pieces, posting relevant documents and livestreams, and controlling quality;
  • Coordinating with book review editors and contributing editors network;
  • Contributing to Lawfare podcasts and live events on topics of need or particular expertise;
  • Optional writing for the site;
  • Assisting with fundraising and donor-required documentation, as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned by Lawfare management.

Lawfare’s benefits include a 401(k) plan with 3% company contribution, health and dental care with premiums fully paid by Lawfare, 10 paid holidays per year, and unlimited paid sick and pre-approved vacation leave. Any failure to regularly perform job duties due to leave will be a factor in determining ongoing employment status.

Candidates must have a college degree; at least one year of relevant editorial experience; demonstrated skill in managing others; and a work history including topics in national security, law, and/or foreign policy. The strongest candidates will have at least two years of related experience. Successful candidates will bring creative ideas, have unquestionable professional integrity, and demonstrate exceptional written and oral communication skills. A familiarity with or interest in legal research is helpful but not required.

The position is based in Washington, DC, with work performed primarily at Lawfare offices near Dupont Circle. For the duration of the COVID-19 crisis, work is being performed remotely.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health and dental care (with premiums fully paid by Lawfare), flexible hours, and 401(k) with Lawfare matching contribution.

Natalie Orpett is the executive editor of Lawfare and deputy general counsel of the Lawfare Institute. She was previously an attorney at the law firm Jenner & Block, where she focused on investigations and government controversies, and also maintained an active pro bono practice. She served as civilian counsel to a defendant in the Guantanamo Military Commissions for more than eight years.
