Court Grants Preliminary Injunction in Challenge to Asylum Ban

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted a preliminary injunction in East Bay Sanctuary et al. v. William Barr et al., a case challenging the Trump administration’s rule denying asylum for any migrants who attempt to enter the United States along the southern border without first applying for asylum in a third country through which they travelled. Vishnu Kannan is special assistant to the president at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Previously he was a James C. Gaither Junior Fellow in Carnegie’s Technology and International Affairs Program, a researcher at Lawfare and the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and an intern at the Brookings Institution. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University where he studied International Relations, Political Theory and Economics.
