On April 27, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released its Annual Statistical Transparency Report (ASTR) for 2022. ASTR details how the federal government has used intelligence gathering authorities granted by the Federal Intelligence and Surveillance Act (FISA), now in its tenth iteration since 2014. The oversight report also details steps taken by the ODNI and broader intelligence community to protect privacy and civil liberties.

This report comes as lawmakers weigh whether to renew, sunset, or adapt FISA Section 702 at the end of this year. Find original analysis published by Lawfare on the possible reauthorization of Section 702 here.
