The Department of Justice has filed a criminal complaint and supporting affidavit against Elena Khusyaynova with a conspiracy to defraud the United States in violation of 18 U.S.C. §371.

The Department of Justice has filed a criminal complaint and supporting affidavit against Elena Khusyaynova with a conspiracy to defraud the United States in violation of 18 U.S.C. §371. The Washington Post reports that the charges are related to attempted meddling in the 2018 midterm elections. The charges were brought by the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Virginia.


Matthew Kahn is a third-year law student at Harvard Law School and a contributor at Lawfare. Prior to law school, he worked for two years as an associate editor of Lawfare and as a junior researcher at the Brookings Institution. He graduated from Georgetown University in 2017.
