On March 31, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland unsealed a March 29 indictment charging a National Security Agency employee for allegedly using his personal email to send highly classified information to an individual. The defendant Mark Robert Unkenholz was an employee of the NSA and held a “Top Secret/SCI clearance.”
The unsealed indictment alleges that “on 13 occasions between Feb. 14, 2018 and June 1, 2020, Unkenholz, lawfully having possession of, access to, and control over NDI [National Defense Information], which he had reason to believe could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation, willfully transmitted that information to another person who was not entitled to receive it.”
The grand jury charged the defendant with a total of 26 counts—13 counts of willful transmission of NDI and 13 counts of willful retention of NDI. The full indictment can be read here or below.
