On Aug. 19, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Committee on the Judiciary, and Committee on Ways and Means released a nearly 300-page report detailing their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The report alleges that “overwhelming evidence demonstrates that President Biden participated in a conspiracy to monetize his office of public trust to enrich his family.” According to the report, this amounts to “impeachable conduct.”

Based on bank records, witness testimony, and whistleblower reports, the report claims that the president’s son, Hunter Biden has, for years, leveraged his family’s proximity to power to solicit foreign business deals. The report alleges that the Biden family received $27 million from foreign entities and an additional $8 million in questionable loans from Democratic benefactors. The report also rehashes previous complaints that the Justice Department mishandled the investigation into Hunter Biden and that President Biden obstructed the probe.

The report, however, does not provide any direct evidence that the president has directly or knowingly participated in criminal wrongdoing or benefited financially from his son’s dealings. It largely focuses on the actions of his son, his allies, and his brother, Jim Biden. Furthermore, the report does not propose specific articles of impeachment, indicating instead that the House must decide whether to pursue a formal impeachment process.

The impeachment effort was initially launched by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last September and continued under Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

“The totality of the corrupt conduct uncovered by the Committees is egregious,” the report asserts. “President Joe Biden conspired to commit influence peddling and grift. In doing so, he abused his office and, by repeatedly lying about his abuse of office, has defrauded the United States to enrich his family.”
