In a conversation completely unrelated to yesterday's election, Jordan Schneider of ChinaTalk and Matthew Klein, author of the recent "Trade Wars Are Class Wars," spoke with Adam Tooze, a professor at Columbia University and an economic historian. They discussed what we can learn from the diplomatic and economic modes of the 1930s, why Nazi legal theory resonates so well in China today, how Xinjiang's camps echo the logic of Soviet gulags, whether the U.S. in fact lost the Cold War and the bureaucracies in which Adam would have loved to work.

Jacquelyn Schneider is a Hoover Fellow at Stanford University, a nonresident fellow at the Naval War College’s Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute, and a senior adviser to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. She researches the intersection of technology, national security, and political psychology with a special interest in cyber, unmanned technologies, and wargaming. Her work has appeared in a variety of outlets, including Security Studies, the Journal of Conflict Resolution, the Journal of Strategic Studies, Foreign Affairs, Lawfare, War on the Rocks, the Washington Post and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. She has a bachelor of arts degree from Columbia University, a master of arts degree from Arizona State University and a doctorate from George Washington University.
Matthew C. Klein is the founder and publisher of The Overshoot, a premium subscription research service focused on the global economy, financial markets, and public policy. He was previously the Economics Commentator at Barron's, and has also written for the Financial Times, Bloomberg View, and the Economist. Before entering journalism, he was a research assistant at the Council on Foreign Relations and an investment associate at Bridgewater.
