New Senate Report Details Jan. 6 Failures

On June 8, the Senate Rules and Administration and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees issued a joint report outlining the intelligence, security and communications failures that precipitated the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. The 127-page report, a product of a bipartisan Senate investigation, provides the most comprehensive account and timeline to date of the breakdowns that allowed the Capitol to be breached.
The report found that intelligence agencies did not adequately warn law enforcement of the potential for violence and that law enforcement officials did not take threats of violence seriously. It also determined that the U.S. Capitol Police lacked the preparedness and capacity to respond effectively when the violence unfolded. The report’s recommendations call for better planning, training and intelligence collection.
