Senate Committees Release Two Different Reports on Bidens

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley have released a report titled “Hunter Biden, Burisma and Corruption” following a GOP-led probe into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. The report, which was published by some Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Finance committees, seeks to renew claims raised by President Donald Trump’s defense team during Trump’s impeachment trial before the Senate. These claims included corruption allegations against the Bidens grounded in concerns about Hunter Biden’s position on a Ukranian natural-gas company during his father’s time in office.

As noted by Kyle Cheney and Andrew Desiderio of Politico, Johnson’s investigation has been shrouded in controversy. They write that Johnson’s allegations against the Bidens in the report mirror those pushed by Andriy Derkach, a pro-Russia Ukranian lawmaker who has been sanctioned by the Treasury Department and classified as a Russian agent. The Politico article notes that Derkach “sent packets of information about Biden to Johnson and other Trump allies on Capitol Hill.” Further, Cheney and Desiderio write that some of Johnson’s fellow Republicans, including Sen. Mitt Romney, have criticized the probe.

Senate Democrats also released a rebuttal report to Johnson and Grassley’s findings, titled “Election Interference: Majority Investigation Amplifies Russian Attack on 2020 Election.” Sens. Gary Peters and Ron Wyden accused their Republican colleagues of pushing Russian disinformation in order to assist the reelection campaign of President Trump and found that the GOP-led report on Biden and Ukraine cited discredited allegations as facts.
