If you haven’t yet had a chance to mentally pause from digesting all the heavy news of the summer – ISIL’s expansion, domestic mass shootings, and extraordinary breaches of sensitive information, to name a few – it’s worth doing, if only to remind yourself of one of childhood’s great thrills: Space.

This summer’s good government surprise award goes to NASA, for bringing us a trifecta of amazing discoveries and a gentle reminder that intelligence, skill, patience and perseverance still matter. My top three:

New Horizon’s exploration of Pluto, a project that required its team to wait nine years, and counting, as the data continues to download over the next many months,

Earth's "older cousin," Kepler-452b,

...and, my personal favorite, Commander Scott Kelly’s exquisite pictures and pithy observations as he keeps watch over us all while we sleep, shared via his daily tweets. Yes, he’s tweeting. From. Space. #year in space.
