Monday, Mar. 6, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) hosted a discussion about how United States’ deterrence strategies in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific are interpreted by Chinese foreign policy experts. The panel featured Michael Mazarr, senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation; Elbridge Colby, co-founder of The Marathon Initiative; Kristen Gunness, senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation; Bonnie Glaser, managing director of the Indo-Pacific program at the German Marshall Fund; and Sean Monaghan, visiting fellow with CSIS’ Europe, Russia and Eurasia Program. The conversation was moderated by Jude Blanchette, Freeman chair in China Studies at CSIS.
Monday, Mar. 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution hosted a webinar to survey economic incentives for addressing climate change. The event featured introductory remarks by David Wessel, director of The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy. Paper presentations by Tobias Adrian, director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department at the International Monetary Fund, and Glenn Rudebusch, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy followed. Discussants Carolyn Fischer, research manager for the World Bank’s Sustainability and Infrastructure Team, and Irene Monasterolo, professor of climate finance at EDHEC Business School, offered insights and engaged with presenters in a panel discussion moderated by Sanjay Patnaik, director of the Brookings Institution’s Center on Regulation and Markets.
Monday, Mar. 6, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host a virtual event to discuss foreign policy and humanitarian responses to recent earthquakes in northern Syria. The event will include introductory remarks by Suzanne Maloney, director of the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy Program, and a panel discussion featuring Steven Heydemann, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution; Amb. Robert Ford, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute; Karam Shaar, nonresident scholar at the Middle East Institute; and Amany Qaddour, executive director at Syria Relief & Development. The conversation will be moderated by Reva Dhingra, post-doctoral research fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy Program.
Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. ET: CSIS will host an event to discuss the United States’ transatlantic partnership with Lithuania and likely focuses of the upcoming NATO summit. The event will feature opening remarks by Kathleen McInnis, senior fellow at CSIS’ Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative, and a discussion with Gabrielius Landsbergis, minister of foreign affairs of Lithuania. It will be moderated by Daniel Fata, nonresident senior advisor at CSIS’ International Security Program.
Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Global Network on Extremism and Technology will host a webinar to discuss the proliferation of sexism and misogyny in online spaces. The event will feature Ashton Kingdon, teaching fellow in criminology at the University of Southampton; Rachel Kowert, research director for Take This; Galen Lamphere-Englund, co-founder of the Extremism and Gaming Research Network; and Ashley Mattheis, research officer at Swansea University. The discussion will be moderated by Jessica White, senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute.
Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Georgetown Center for the Constitution and the Institute for Justice will host an in-person symposium to discuss qualified immunity and other instruments which enable police misconduct. The event will begin with a live recording of the Institute for Justice’s Short Circuit podcast, featuring Joanna Schwartz, professor of law at the University of California, Los Angeles; Carlos Vázquez, professor of law at Georgetown University; Seth Stoughton, professor of law at the University of South Carolina; Alexander Reinert, professor of law at Yeshiva University; and moderator Anya Bidwell, attorney at the Institute for Justice. The event's first panel discussion, entitled “Real Life Perspectives on Civil Rights,” will feature Victor Glasberg, attorney at Victor M. Glasberg & Associates; Cassi Pollreis, client of the Institute for Justice; Houston Stevens, plaintiff in Monroe v. Pape; Stephen Lara, client of the Institute for Justice; and moderator Alexa Gervasi, executive director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution. The event’s second panel, detailing “Current Trends in the Civil Rights Jurisprudence,” will feature Scott Michelman, legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union’s Washington, D.C. office; Kelsi Brown Corkran, supreme court director at the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection; Devi Rao, director of the MacArthur Justice Center; Tiffany Wright, supervising attorney at the Howard University Civil Rights Clinic; and moderator Patrick Jaicomo, senior attorney at the Institute for Justice. The symposium will conclude with a keynote address, introduced by James Pfander, professor of law at Northwestern University, and delivered by Joanna Schwartz, professor of law at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University will host a seminar to interrogate the morality of using online disinformation to prevent atrocities, and the responsibility of platforms and content moderators. The event will feature Rhiannon Neilsen, postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford University Center for International Security and Cooperation.
Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The House Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing to review the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Committee will hear testimony from four witnesses: Francis Hoang, executive chairman of Allied Airlift 21; Lt. Col. (Ret.) David Scott Mann, founder of Task Force Pineapple; Aidan Gunderson, specialist in the U.S. Army; and Peter Lucier, strategic partnerships lead for Team America Relief.
Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The George Washington University Program on Extremism will host a webinar to identify opportunities for improving and integrating policies which prevent and counter violent extremism in the United States and United Kingdom. The discussion will feature Brette Steele, senior director for preventing targeted violence at the McCain Institute for International Leadership; Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, research director at The George Washington University Program on Extremism; Hannah Stuart, director of the Counter Extremism Group; Rashad Ali, senior fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue; and Liam Duffy, strategic advisor at the Counter Extremism Project. The Committee will hear testimony from Dr. Aleksander Mądry, director of the MIT Center for Deployable Machine Learning; Dr. Eric Schmidt, chair of the Special Competitive Studies Project; and Dr. Scott Crowder, vice president of IBM Quantum Computing.
Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host a conversation to discuss the foreign policy transition from the Bush administration to the Obama administration. The event will feature introductory remarks by Frederick Kempe, president of the Atlantic Council, and a discussion with Stephen Hadley, former national security advisor to President George W. Bush and recent author of “Hand-Off: The Foreign Policy George W. Thursday, Mar. 9, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Wilson Center will host an event to discuss geostrategic competition for critical minerals and how clean energy initiatives will affect the securitization of natural resources. The conversation will feature Cory Combs, associate director of Trivium China; Helaina Matza, deputy special coordinator for the Partnership on Global Infrastructure Investment at the U.S. Department of State; Jewellord (Jojo) Nem Singh, assistant professor at the International Institute of Social Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam; and Jennifer Turner, director of the China Environment Forum.
