Monday, March 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council hosted a panel to examine the condition of Iraqi youth 20 years after the United States invaded in 2003. Abbas Kadhim, director of the Atlantic Council’s Iraq Initiative, provided introductory remarks. Panelists included Nibras Basitkey, program assistant at the Atlantic Council’s empowerME program; Shivan Fazil, researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute; Hamzeh Hadad, adjunct fellow at the Center for New American Security; and Murad Ismael, president of Sinjar Academy. The discussion was moderated by Hezha Barzani, program assistant at the Atlantic Council’s empowerME program.
Monday, March 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Wilson Center hosted an event to highlight the role of women entrepreneurs in Middle Eastern economies and launch the new report “Women Entrepreneurship in MENA: The Cases of Bahrain, Lebanon, and Tunisia.” The conversation featured remarks from Lynn Mounzer, global fellow at the Wilson Center and lead researcher for the report; Lama Moussawi, associate professor of management science at the American University of Beirut; MaryClare Roche, director of technology at the Arab Barometer; and Faisal Hammad, assistant undersecretary for competitiveness and economic indicators for the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Ministry of Finance and National Economy. The event featured introductory remarks from Mark A. Green, president and CEO of the Wilson Center; Katrina Fotovat, a senior official in the Office of Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State; and Shaikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa, ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United States. The event was moderated by Merissa Khurma, program director of the Wilson Center’s Middle East Program.
Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host a discussion to analyze strategies to modernize the U.S. Army in a rapidly-evolving security environment. The event will feature remarks from Gen. James McConville, chief of staff for the U.S. Army. Melanie Sisson, fellow at the Brookings Institution; and Michael O’Hanlon, director of research at Brookings Foreign Policy will moderate the discussion.
Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. ET: The Wilson Center will host a discussion to examine the intersection of cooperative climate research and geopolitical tensions in the Arctic. The event will begin with introductory remarks from. Anniken Ramberg Krutnes, ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to the United States. The event will feature keynote remarks from Rep. Chellie Pingree (D.-Maine) followed by a panel discussion. Panelists include: Pingree; Michael Sfraga, chair of the Wilson Center’s Polar Institute; Jane Lubchenco, deputy director for climate and the environment at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Larry Hinzman, assistant director of polar sciences at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Jan-Gunnar Winther, director of the Norwegian Centre for the Ocean and the Arctic; and Antje Boetius, director of the Alfred Wegener Institute. The conversation will be moderated by Evan Bloom, senior fellow at the Wilson Center’s Polar Institute, and David Balton, executive director of the Arctic Executive Steering Committee in the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy.

The conversation will feature remarks from Debra Cagan, senior advisor at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center; Lt. Gen. (ret.) Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs will hold a hearing to assess the health and national security risks posed by drug shortages. Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host a virtual event to reflect on the lasting domestic impacts of the U.S. invasion of Iraq 20 years later. The conversation will feature remarks from Akeel Abbas, an Iraqi academic; Marsin Alshamary, research fellow at the Middle East Initiative; Mohanad Hage Ali, director of communications at the Malcolm H. The webinar will feature remarks from Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the national leader of Belarus. Serge Kharytonau, director of the film, “Long Way Home;” will provide introductory remarks, and Herbst will moderate the discussion.
Thursday, March 23, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment will host a discussion to analyze current challenges facing U.S. foreign policy including rising tensions with China and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The event will feature remarks from Tom Donilon, former national security adviser to President Barack Obama; and Stephen Hadley, former assistant to the president for national security affairs under Obama and President George W. Bush. The conversation will be moderated by Carnegie Endowment Senior Fellow Aaron David Miller.
Friday, March 24, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) will host a conference to discuss the current state and future of U.S. missile defense programs. The conference will feature multiple panel discussions to cover a range of topics including the broad impacts of Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), how missile defense has evolved since Reagan’s 1983 speech announcing the SDI, and future missile defense strategy, programs, and budgets. The first panel will discuss congressional perspectives on U.S. missile defense programs. The second panel will reflect on the SDI’s history and policy decisions, and the third will discuss the industrial base for missile defense. The event will also feature a discussion with Vice Adm. John Hill, director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, about the agency’s 2024 budget request to Congress. Tom Karako, CSIS senior fellow, will moderate the discussion.
Friday, March 24, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Wilson Center will host an event to discuss political oppression and possible human rights abuses in Venezuela. Green and Benjamin Gedan, director of the Wilson Center’s Latin America program, will provide introductory remarks. Iván Duque Márquez, former president of the Republic of Colombia and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D.-Fla) will provide keynote remarks. Eddy Acevedo, chief of staff to the president of the Wilson Center, will then moderate a panel discussion. Panelists include: Cristina V. Burelli, executive director of the V5 Initiative, P. Michael McKinley, nonresident senior adviser at CSIS’s Americas Program; and Marta Valiñas, chair of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Friday, March 24, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. ET: CSIS will host a virtual event to evaluate the state of the U.S. defense industrial base and emerging challenges in the era of great power competition. The webcast will feature remarks from Rep. Mike Waltz (R.-Fla.); Rep. Jason Crow (D.-Colo.); and Seth Jones, senior vice president at CSIS.
