In one of my numerous other lives, I am running the Campaign 2012 project for the Brookings Institution. The Campaign 2012 project is a cross-Brookings effort to identify critical issues facing the next administration and come up with constructive policy options, whether the next administration turns out to be a second term of an Obama administration or a Republican administration that replaces it. The core of the project is twelve papers from around the institution, each accompanied by two shorter response papers from other Brookings scholars. For each of these sets of papers, we are holding a panel event sometime over the next several months. Most of these sets of papers involve issues of no particular relevance to Lawfare, but yesterday's event and the accompanying papers are an exception. The event focused on a paper entitled "Maximizing Chances for Success in Afghanistan and Pakistan," by Michael E. O'Hanlon and Bruce Riedel. The two response papers were by Vanda Felbab-Brown, entitled "The Afghanistan Challenge: A Government that Serves the Afghan People, and by Elizabeth Ferris, entitled "The Afghanistan–Pakistan Challenge: Meeting Humanitarian Needs." The discussion was moderated by Charles Hoskinson of The Politico. The video is not yet available, but the audio is available here. I also did a one-on-one interview with O'Hanlon about his and Riedel's paper. As soon as that is available, I will post it as well. UPDATE: The video of the event is now available as well:
