Charles L. Black

Charles Lund Black Jr. (1915-2001) was one of the leading constitutional law scholars of the twentieth century. From 1947 to 1999, he taught at Columbia Law School and Yale Law School, where he was named Sterling Professor in 1975. He assisted Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in drafting the legal brief for Linda Brown in the landmark desegregation case Brown v. Board of Education and wrote numerous books over his half-century teaching career, including Capital Punishment: The Inevitability of Caprice and Mistake, The People and the Court, Structure and Relationship in Constitutional Law, The Law of Admiralty and Impeachment: A Handbook.
