It’s Day 4 of “Inside NSA: We Brought in a Recording Device So You Don’t Have To”—the special series of podcast interviews we've been running this week with senior NSA officials. In our penultimate episode, we speak with Anne Neuberger, who has the unenviable task of running NSA's liaison with the U.S. private sector. Industry is pretty upset with the agency these days---for the breadth of collection, for failing to keep industry's cooperation with intelligence programs secret, for allegedly breaking encryption systems, and for allegedly tapping the pipes between overseas data centers. Neuberger talks about these issues, as well as NSA's sense of responsibility for the predicament it has created for industry and the need for some clear legal process for industry cooperation with intelligence programs.
The complete series, in addition to today’s episode, includes five interviews: Monday: Rajesh De, NSA’s general counsel Tuesday: John DeLong, the agency’s chief compliance officer Wednesday: Lonny Anderson, the head of the agency's Technology Directorate Friday: Fran Fleisch, NSA’s executive director and—as of last week—acting deputy director If you’re enjoying this series, please subscribe to the Lawfare Podcast on iTunes or on whatever service you use to listen to podcasts.
