Marine Corps University Chair of Military Theory
The Marine Corps University Foundation is seeking applicants for the Major General Matthew C. Horner Chair of Military Theory. The Chair provides the Marine Corps University a resident scholar with expertise in military history, national security affairs, international relations or the military arts. In addition to leading seminars at the University’s colleges, the Horner Chair teaches a graduate-level elective at the University’s Command and Staff College. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to conduct significant research that will lead to the publication of professional papers, monographs, and/or a major publication.
The Horner Chair is a one-year appointment, with an option for a second year. The start date for the Chair is January 2017. To be eligible, candidates must demonstrate a strong record of scholarship in an applicable field. An earned Doctorate is desired but not mandatory.

About the Office:The National Security Division's (NSD) Office of Law and Policy, United States Department of Justice, seeks interns for positions located in Washington, D.C. The mission of NSD is to coordinate the Department's efforts in carrying out its top priority of preventing and combating terrorism and protecting the national security. NSD provides legal and policy advice on national security matters, litigates counterterrorism, counterespionage, and foreign intelligence surveillance matters, represents the Government before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and other federal trial and appellate courts, and conducts oversight over Federal Bureau of Investigation national security investigations and foreign intelligence collection. The Office of Law and Policy is responsible for, among other things, resolving novel and complex legal issues relating to national security that arise from the work of the Division and other parts of the Department; providing advice and guidance to Department leadership, the Intelligence Community, and other Executive Branch agencies on matters of national security law and policy; overseeing the development of legislation, guidelines, and other policies in the area of national security; working with foreign governments on a variety of national security issues; and handling appeals that arise in national security cases. Job Description:Intern projects include: researching legal questions, drafting memoranda or other legal and policy analysis, factual research, and assisting with presentations and supporting materials.
Qualifications:Open to all law students. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. law school at the time of application and throughout their internship. Strong research and writing skills are required. Prior interest or experience in the area of national security would be useful, but is not required. By the time of the internship, all applicants must have taken one or more of the following courses: Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, or Constitutional Law. Additional courses addressing criminal law and litigation or national security or intelligence law, would also be helpful.

Intern – International Humanitarian Law
OBJECTIVE: The Intern in the IHL Department at the Washington Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provides research and writing on topics of IHL, other branches of international law, and U.S. law as needed, thus contributing to the thematic and operational priorities of the legal team.
Minimum required knowledge & experience:
Basic knowledge of IHL and a related legal field (e.g. National Security or Human Rights Law).
Excellent oral and written English skills, good understanding of French an asset
Currently pursuing a U.S. J.D. or LLM degree (or JD graduate pursuing another graduate degree)

JOB DESCRIPTION
Main Responsibilities
Work with the IHL team to provide legal advice to the delegation in Washington, and to the ICRC as a whole on matters of IHL, human rights law, national security law, or other U.S. legal issues.
Research and Writing. Research such topics as scope of application of IHL, detention, conduct of hostilities, cyber/new technology and weapons, and other related topics. Possibility of authoring articles or other short pieces for the ICRC’s U.S. blog (intercrossblog.icrc.org).
Monitor Legal Developments Regular monitoring of legal blogs and news coverage to identify significant legal developments of interest to the delegation. In addition to research, the intern will attend conferences and meetings in order to monitor developments on specific legal issues on behalf of the legal team.
Reporting. Regular and timely reporting and analysis on meetings and events attended, as well as a weekly report on any relevant legal developments reported in external sources such as legal blogs. Reports are written for the purpose of ensuring the institution is informed of developments in U.S. policy, as well as to advance its thinking on key issues.
Management and Reporting Line. The IHL Intern reports directly to the IHL Legal Advisor. He/she is expected to collaborate with colleagues throughout the delegation in order to carry out these and other reasonably related duties.
The intern will be expected to work 40 hours a week for 12 weeks between June and August. Starting and ending date are negotiable. This is a paid internship. OVERVIEW:
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court employs six Legal Advisors to assist the Judges of the Court in considering applications presented by the U.S. government for authority to conduct electronic surveillance, physical search or other forms of intelligence gathering pursuant to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Legal Advisors also advise Judges on legal issues presented in applications or that are otherwise before the Court.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Court invites applications from attorneys with at least four years of legal work experience, including at least one year equivalent to work at the JSP-14 level. The Court is particularly interested in individuals who have an expertise in national security law, constitutional law, privacy, or communications technology and the law. Experience in litigation is also preferred. To be considered, an applicant must be a licensed attorney, a member in good standing of the bar of at least one jurisdiction, and possess a current security clearance, preferably Top Secret/SCI.

Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Legal Fellow
The American Red Cross International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and teaching the rules of war. In the coming years the American Red Cross will deepen and expand its programming around the world while also working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, in order to deliver vital help and hope to some of the most vulnerable communities.
We are looking for a Clara Barton Legal Fellow to work with the international humanitarian law (IHL) team to support our legal education program on IHL. The fellow will work as part of a small team where he/she will gain hands on experience conducting legal research and writing, providing thorough legal analysis on relevant IHL issues, and working to support and strengthen the team’s IHL education programs.
A background in international law or policy, and an interest in social media and educational development are essential. Our fellows work as integral members of our team and carry out professional level work in a supervised atmosphere.
Responsibilities include working with the Legal Advisors and the IHL Director, as well as other members of the team to deliver IHL Legal Education programs; research and write short updates for the team’s IHL blog; and compile updates on current IHL issues. Fellows will create promotional materials for use by ARC chapters, partner agencies, and community groups, as well as promoting IHL awareness internally. Fellows will also develop content for IHL-related events, brown bags, and speaking engagements; monitor social media and perform follow-up activities to strengthen our networks; and gather information on IHL programs for monitoring and reporting purposes. Fellows will have an opportunity to work with an IHL Legal Advisor to pursue an independent project related to a timely international humanitarian law issue.
Skills and Qualifications:
Recent law school graduate, with an interest in pursuing a career in international law or policy, international relations, or a related discipline. Prior knowledge of international humanitarian law or international criminal law essential; Must have strong written and verbal communication skills; robust legal research skills, and computer skills, including familiarity with social media tools; Ability to translate complex legal issues into terms understandable by an average member of the public with no prior IHL knowledge; passion for international law issues and humanitarian values; Interest in educational development; Must be responsible, mature, able to work independently, highly organized, detail-oriented, able to handle multiple tasks at the same time and work under deadline pressure; Willingness to do background research and perform general office duties, as required.
