Monday, Jan. 31, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.: The Brookings Institution will host a virtual event to compare and discuss how the United States and its allies are addressing ethical considerations in their pursuit and integration of military applications of AI-enabled technologies. Opening remarks will be delivered by Brookings President John R. Allen. Panelists include Brookings fellows Melanie W. Sisson and Heather M. Roff; Jared Dunnmon, technical director at U.S. Defense Innovation Unit; U.K. Ministry of Defence Deputy Head Michael Gibson; and Michael Street, head of innovation and data science at NATO’s NCI Agency. 

Monday, Jan. 31, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.: The Atlantic Council will host a virtual discussion on how U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) can leverage biometrics to improve operations at U.S. entry points with Forward Defense and its Future of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Project. The discussion will feature Clementine G. Starling, deputy director of Forward Defense at the Atlantic Council; Troy A. Miller, deputy commissioner of CBP at DHS; Theresa Cardinal Brown, managing director of immigration and cross-border policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center; Craig McIntire, vice president of DHS, CBP and TSA border security solutions at SAIC; Seth Stodder, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council; and John P. Wagner, former deputy executive assistant commissioner at the CBP office of field operations at DHS. 

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing to examine Sudan's imperiled transition to a new government and will focus on U.S. policy in the wake of the country’s recent coup d’etat. The committee will hear testimony from Mary Catherine Phee, assistant secretary of state for African affairs at the U.S. Department of State; Isobel Coleman, deputy administrator at the U.S. Agency for International Development; Comfort Ero, president and CEO of the International Crisis Group; and Joseph Tucker, senior expert for the greater horn of Africa at the United States Institute of Peace. 

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022 at 2:30 p.m.: The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Data Security will hold a hearing to examine the ongoing proliferation of scams and price gouging related to and enabled by the coronavirus pandemic, highlight efforts to educate consumers about coronavirus-related scams and explore proposals to strengthen the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s enforcement against unfair and deceptive practices. The subcommittee will hear testimony from Samuel A.A. Levine, director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The House Committee on Homeland Security will hold a hearing on the dynamic terrorism landscape and what it means for America. The committee will hear testimony from Nicholas Rasmussen, executive director of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism; Johnathan Greenblatt, chief executive officer of the Anti-Defamation League; Cynthia Miller, professor at American University; and Bill Roggio, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. 

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation will convene an executive session to consider the nominations of Alvaro Bedoya to be a Commissioner of the FTC and Gigi Sohn to be a Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission, among other nominations. 

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.: The House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis will hold a hearing on how the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Build Back Better Act would attract new investment to the United States to clean up hard-to-decarbonize sectors, expand domestic supply chains and manufacturing of climate solutions and create good-paying jobs. The committee will receive testimony from Paul Browning, president and CEO of Fortescue Future Industries; Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of Solar Energy Industries Association; Jessica Eckdish, vice president of legislation and federal affairs at BlueGreen Alliance; and Charles McConnell, executive director of the Center for Carbon Management and Energy Sustainability at the University of Houston Energy.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.: Brookings Metro will host a discussion that will examine disparities in financial access and the tools that are providing liquidity and line-of-credit capabilities in underserved and underbanked communities. The discussion will feature a panel that includes Aisha Mills of BNC News; Brookings fellow, Kristen Broady; Fabrice E. Coles, senior manager of global public policy and research at PayPal; Sangeetha Raghunathan, general counsel and chief compliance office at Earnin; and Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.: The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa and Global Counterterrorism will hold a hearing on the Biden administration’s policy objectives in the Middle East and North Africa. The subcommittee will hear testimony from Yael Lempert, acting assistant secretary of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the U.S. Department of State; and Andrew Plitt, acting assistant administrator of the Bureau for the Middle East at the U.S. Agency for International Development.  

Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 at 2:30 p.m.: The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust and Consumer Rights will hold a hearing to examine journalism, competition and the effects of market power on a free press. The subcommittee has not yet released a witness list. 

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.: The Brookings Institution’s Africa Growth Initiative will host a discussion about Dr. Olusoji Adeyi’s new book “Global Health in Practice: Investing Amidst Pandemics, Denial of Evidence, and Neo-dependency,” and strategies for self-sufficiency in the health sector in the Global South. In addition to Adeyi, the panel will feature Brookings senior fellow, Aloysius Uche Ordu; the Kofi Annan Foundation’s Elhadj As Sy; Keith Martin, executive director of the Consortium of the Universities for the Global Health; and Ritva Reinikka, professor at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics. 

Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.: The House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation will hold a hearing on 5G deployment and aviation safety. The subcommittee has not yet released a witness list.
