The event will feature one panel discussion about Taiwan’s economy in the shadow of cross-Strait tensions and another about doing business in Taiwan's globalized economy. Monday, May 16, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event to discuss Scotland and the future of European energy security. The event will feature a conversation between Samantha Gross, Brookings fellow; and Nicola Sturgeon, first minister of Scotland.
Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. ET: The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties will hold a hearing to examine potential reforms of emergency powers. The subcommittee has yet to release a witness list.
Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event to examine threats to American democracy. The event will feature one panel discussion about electoral and institutional challenges and another about digital threats, misinformation and disinformation. Panelists include: Darrell M. West, Brookings senior fellow; Isabel V. Sawhill, Brookings senior fellow; Keesha Middlemass, Brookings fellow; Gabriel R. Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event to examine challenges facing the Horn of Africa. Experts will discuss the various challenges affecting the Horn, examine possible solutions, and also explore the positive opportunities available in the region. The event will feature remarks from Michael E. O’Hanlon, Brookings senior fellow; Vanda Felbab-Brown, Brookings senior fellow; Jeffrey Feltman, Brookings visiting fellow; and Workneh Gebeyehhu, executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET: The House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing entitled Revoking Your Rights: The Ongoing Crisis in Abortion Care Access. The committee has not yet released a witness list.
Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET: The House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties will hold a hearing on curriculum “sabotage” and classroom censorship. The subcommittee has yet to release a witness list.
Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event about addressing climate change in U.S. defense strategy and budget. The event will feature a panel discussion including Suzanne Maloney, Brookings Foreign Policy vice president and director; Samantha Gross, Brookings fellow; Joe Bryan, senior advisor for climate to the secretary of defense and chief sustainability officer at the Department of Defense; David G. Victor, Brookins nonresident senior fellow; and Melissa Dalton, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and hemispheric affairs at the Department of Defense.
Friday, May 20 at 9:30 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) will host an event to examine international norms under pressure: state compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law. The event will feature a discussion with Cordula Dorege, chief legal officer of the International Committee of the Red Cross; Oona Hathaway, professor of law and political science at Yale University; Chanaka Wickermasinghe, minster-counsellor and legal advisor of the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations; John J.
