Monday, October 17, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council’s Europe Center hosted a virtual discussion about the new U.S.-EU framework for transfers of personal data from Europe to the United States. with Alex Greenstein, director of Privacy Shield at the Department of Commerce; Jocelyn Aqua, data, privacy and ethics leader of products and technology at PwC US; and Christopher Kuner, co-director of the Brussels Privacy Hub. The discussion was moderated by Kenneth Propp, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

Monday, October 17, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies’s Americas Program hosted a discussion about the Brazilian presidential elections, the future of the U.S.-Brazil relations, the increasing influence of China in the region, the country’s foreign policy priorities, and more. The event featured remarks from Americas Program Nonresident Senior Advisers Liliana Ayalde, Todd Chapman, and P. Michael McKinley, as well as Americas Program Director Ryan C. Berg.

Monday, October 17, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Middle East Program hosted a launch event for Jessica Barnes’s book “Staple Security: Bread and Wheat in Egypt”. The event featured a conversation with Barnes, an associate professor at the University of South Carolina; George Perkovich, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Amr Hamzaway, director of the Carnegie Middle East program. In addition to Barnes’s new book, the experts discussed the politics of grain imports, bread subsidies, and food security.  

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. EST: The Center for Strategic and International Studies’s Middle East Program will host a conversation on the ongoing protests in Iran following the Sept. 16 death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody, and what the protests might mean for Iran and the region. The event will feature remarks from Yeganeh Rezaian, a senior research at the Committee to Protect Journalists; Arash Azizi, a historian at New York University;, Kirsten Fontenrose, nonresident senior fellow in the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council; and Jon B. Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at CSIS. Jason Rezaian, a writer for the Washington Post, will deliver opening remarks.  

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights will hold a hearing examining the Office of Legal Counsel’s role in shaping the doctrine of executive privilege. The subcommittee will hear testimony from Christopher H. Schroeder, assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel.

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies’s Program on Democracy and the Internet will host a conversation on how platforms shape media, society, and key aspects of the “platform power” exercised by technology companies. The conversation will feature remarks by Nate Persily, senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute, and Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies  will host a conversation about rising tensions between the U.S. and China, its interplay with the domestic political environment of South Korea, and its influence on the South Korean perspective on international affairs. The event will feature discussion from Myung Hwan Yu, former minister of foreign affairs and trade of South Korea, as well as Gi-Wook Shin, director of the Shorenstein APARC and Korea Program at Stanford University. 

Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, and Defense News Naval Warfare Reporter Megan Eckstein  for a discussion on challenges to the U.S. Navy’s maritime dominance and how the Navy can build, maintain, train, and equip a dominant naval force.  

Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host an event to examine how immigration affects democratic politics globally and in the United States, and how governments can positively respond to shifting demographics. Natalie Banulescu-Bogdan, associate director of the International Program at the Migration Policy Institute; Jordan Gest, associate professor of policy and government at George Mason University; and Rachel Kleinfield, a senior fellow in Carnegie’s Democracy, Conflict, and Governance program, will discuss these topics as well as Gest’s new book, “Majority Minority”. 

Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 9:45 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies will host a discussion of China’s relations with the two Koreas, the 20th National Congress of the CCP, and the U.S.’s recent National Security Strategy. The event will feature remarks fromVictor Cha, CSIS senior vice president for Asia and Korea chair; Sue Mi Terry, director of the Asia Center at the Wilson Center; and Jonathan Cheng, China bureau chief at the Wall Street Journal. The discussion will be moderated by Mark Lippert, nonresident senior adviser and Korea chair at CSIS.

Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. ET: The Atlantic Council’s Future of Iran Initiative will host a discussion on how the latest women-led protests in Iran may shape the country’s trajectory, domestic politics, and foreign policy decision-making. The event will feature Shahrzad Ardalan, host and producer of Zendeghee Zibast “Life is Beautiful”; David Des Roches, professor at the National Defense University;, Nader Hashemi, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Denver; Assal Rad, research director of the National Iranian American Council. The discussion will be moderated by Barbara Slavin, director of the Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council. 

Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies's Center for International Security and Cooperation will host an event to examine why parties that commit mass atrocities in war often win support from victimized populations as they attempt to establish a postwar political order. Keynote remarks will be delivered bySarah Z. Daly, associate professor of political science at Columbia University. 

Friday, October 21, 2022 at 8:30 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host a fireside chat to discuss the Czech perspective on Europe’s energy challenges as the country’s presidency of the Council of the European Union continues.  The event will feature discussion between Olga Khakova, deputy director for European energy security of the Global Energy Center at the Atlantic Council, and H.E. Václav Bartuška, the Czech ambassador-at-large for Energy Security.. Richard Morningstar, the founding chairman of the Global Energy Center, will deliver opening remarks. 

Friday, October 21, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies will host a conversation with Lynette H. Ong, author of “Outsourcing Repression,” about how China engages non-state actors to coerce and mobilize the masses for state pursuits. The conversation will be moderated by Andrew Walder, senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
