Monday, December 12, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host a discussion about the United States’s strategic interests in global climate action and the priorities of African nations for just energy transitions to a low-carbon future. The discussion will feature remarks from President Hage G. Geingob of the Republic of Namibia; Amani Abou-Zeid, the African Union commissioner for infrastructure, energy, and digitalization; Ervin Massinga, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State; Harry Kamian; principal deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Energy Resources at the U.S. Department of State; and Zainab Usman, senior fellow and director of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s Africa program. Tino Cuéllar, the president of Carnegie, will provide opening remarks. 

Monday, December 12, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) will host a panel discussion to analyze the challenges to government transparency and anticorruption in the Western Hemisphere. The discussion will feature remarks from Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.); Marco Antonio Rueda Soto, president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia’s Special Instruction Chamber; Dorothy Bradley, auditor general of Belize; Charisse Phillips, deputy assistant secretary for Western Hemisphere programs and aviation at the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement; Annette Planells; an anticorruption civil society leader and activist; Juan Francisco Sandoval Alfaro; former chief of the Special Prosecutors Office Against Impunity in Guatemala; and Ryan C. Berg, director of the Americas Program at CSIS.

Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at 9:15 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host a conversation with the President of Botswana, H.E.Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, about strategies for pursuing his administration's priorities including creating jobs, promoting sustainable growth, and more. The conversation will also feature remarks from Aloysius Uche Ordu, director of the Brookings Institution’s Africa Growth Initiative. Brahima Sangafowa Coulibaly, vice president and director of the Brookings Institution’s Global Economy and Development program, will provide introductory remarks.  

Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies will host a conversation to examine the challenges and opportunities for strengthening U.S.-Africa relations during the upcoming U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. The conversation will feature remarks from Mvemba Phezo Dizolele, senior fellow and director of CSIS’ Africa Program; and Cameron Hudson, nonresident senior associate also at CSIS’sAfrica Program. 

Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host a conversation to analyze an experimental set of strategies to combat climate change and respond to climate change’s impacts on security. The conversation will feature remarks from David G. Victor, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Energy Security and Climate Initiative;Samantha Gross, director of Brookings’s Energy Security and Climate Initiative; and Michael E. O’Hanlon, director of research of Brookings Foreign Policy

Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. ET: The House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade will hold a hearing to examine ways to promote sustainable environmental practices through trade policy. The subcommittee will hear testimony from Alexander von Bismarck, executive director of the Environmental Investigation Agency; Roy Houseman, legislative director at United Steelworkers; Michele Kuruc, vice president of ocean policy at the World Wildlife Fund; and Rich Powell, chief executive officer of ClearPath.

Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host a discussion about the direction of the Russian war in Ukraine, the resolve of the U.S.-led coalition, and how the conflict has affected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s domestic support. The discussion will feature remarks from Aaron David Miller, senior fellow at Carnegie; Ekaterina Schulmann, a Russian political observer; and Andrew S. Weiss, the James Family chair and vice president for studies at Carnegie. 

Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security will hold a hearing to examine the shooting in Uvalde, Texas and discuss the possibilities of bipartisan solutions to gun violence. The subcommittee has yet to release a witness list. 

Friday, December 16, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host a panel discussion to examine how the United States and its allies can support Taiwan’s ability to engage with the global community despite Beijing’s efforts to restrict its global engagement. The panel will feature remarks from Yunyu Chen, journalist at the Central News Agency of Taiwan; Jacque deLisle, professor of law and political science at the University of Pennsylvania; Jessica Drun, nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub; James Lee, assistant research fellow at Academia Sinica; Sara Newland, assistant professor of government at Smith College; Shelley Rigger, professor of Asian studies at Davidson College; Petr Tuma, visiting fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center; and Michael Thim, research fellow at the Association for International Affairs. The discussion will be moderated by Wen-Ti Sung, sessional lecturer at the Australian National University College of Asia & the Pacific; and Marie Jourdain, visiting fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center. David O. Shullman, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub, will provide opening remarks.

Friday, December 16, 2022, at 8:50 a.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host two discussions about the Biden administration’s foreign policy accomplishments and challenges in its first two years. The first discussion will feature remarks from Cuéllar; and Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s National Security Adviser. The panel following Sullivan and Cuéllar’s conversation will feature Matthew Duss, visiting scholar in Carnegie’s American Statecraft program; Rana Foroohar, global business columnist and associate editor at the Financial Times; Evan A. Feigenbaum, vice president for studies at Carnegie ; Kori Schake, senior fellow and director of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute; and Andrew S. Weiss, the James Family chair and vice president for studies at Carnegie.
