Monday, April 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution hosted a conversation about how the social cost of carbon quantifies the economic damage of carbon emissions. The event began with remarks by David Wessel, director of the Brookings Institution’s Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy, and included a panel discussion featuring Coral Davenport, energy and environmental policy reporter for the New York Times; Noah Kaufman, research scholar at the Columbia University Center on Global Energy Policy; Brian C. Prest, director of the Social Cost of Carbon Initiative at Resources for the Future; and Glenn D. Rudebusch, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Wessel moderated the conversation.

Monday, April 3, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host a discussion to survey European Union-China relations amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising geostrategic competition. The conversation will feature Reinhard Bütikofer, chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with the People’s Republic of China; Colleen Cottle, deputy director of the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub; François Godement, senior advisor for Asia at the Institut Montaigne; and Rachel Rizzo, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.

Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University will host a seminar to discuss how compounding economic, technological, sociopolitical, and environmental risks can render systemic security challenges. The event will feature remarks from Trond Undheim, research scholar in global systemic risk, innovation, and policy at Stanford University’s Existential Risk Initiative.

Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) will host a conference to discuss transatlantic defense cooperation. The event will feature remarks from John J. Hamre, president of CSIS; Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo Aerospace, Defense, and Security; Seth G. Jones, senior vice president at CSIS, and a keynote discussion with Adm. Christopher W. Grady, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, moderated by Jones. The conference will feature three panels: the first will discuss present challenges to European security, the second will examine strategies for defending the continent from external threats, and the third will highlight opportunities for transnational cooperation toward European security.

Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host an event to evaluate the costs of geoeconomic fragmentation to launch two chapters of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook and Global Financial Stability Report. The event will feature remarks from Mario Catalán, deputy chief of the IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department; Megan Greene, senior fellow at Brown University; and Andrea Presbitero, economist at the IMF’s Research Department. The conversation will be moderated by Josh Lipsky, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center. 

Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 10:15 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host a discussion about strategies to implement the Biden administration’s National Cybersecurity Strategy. The conversation will feature remarks from Kemba Walden, acting national cyber director in the Executive Office of the President of the United States; Jen Easterly, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency; Nathaniel C. Fick, ambassador at large for cyberspace and digital policy at the U.S. Department of State; Marshall Miller, principal associate deputy attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice; and Craig Newmark, creator of the Cyber Civil Defense Initiative. The discussion will be moderated by Trey Herr, director of the Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft Initiative; and Graham Brookie, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab.

Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. ET: The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) will host a virtual event to weigh factors that affect Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon. The discussion will feature remarks from Henry Rome, senior fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy; Sina Azodi, visiting scholar at the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs; and Dania Thafer, executive director of the Gulf International Forum. The conversation will be moderated by Jonathan Lord, director of the Middle East Security Program at CNAS.

Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. ET: The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University will host an event to evaluate how the collapse of oil and gas revenue disrupts political systems in fragile states. The discussion will feature Katrina Burgess, associate professor of political economy at the Fletcher School; Alex de Waal, executive director of the World Peace Foundation at the Fletcher School; and Aditya Sarkar, Ph.D candidate also at the Fletcher school.

Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. ET: The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University will host a seminar to evaluate the status of North Korea’s nuclear program. The event will feature Siegfried Hecker, professor of practice at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and recent author of the book “Hinge Points: An Inside Look at North Korea’s Nuclear Program.”

Friday, April 7, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Institute for International Economic Policy at the George Washington University will host a conference to examine economic relations between the United States and China. The event will feature four panel discussions: the first will address the current state of the Chinese political system and the second panel will provide context for China’s autocracy. The third panel will discuss the trade war between the U.S. and China before a fourth panel reviews prospects for the bilateral relationship. The conference will also feature a keynote address by Harry Harding, university chair professor in the College of Social Science at National Cheng Chi University in Taiwan.
