Event Announcements

Monday, Feb. 7, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution will host a panel discussion on the relationship between civil society and democracy in Iraq. The panel will feature Marsin Alshamary, research fellow for the Middle East Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School; Simona Foltyn, an independent journalist and special correspondent at PBS NewsHour in Iraq; Shamiran Mako, assistant professor at Boston University; and Lahib Higel, senior analyst at the International Crisis Group. 

Monday, Feb. 7, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.: Brookings will host an event marking the launch of a new book by Brookings Rubenstein Fellow Tara Watson and journalist Kalee Thompson, “The Border Within: The Economics of Immigration in an Age of Fear.” The event will feature a presentation from the authors followed by a panel discussion among experts on immigration policy. Panelists include: Kristin F. Butcher, director of the Brookings Center on Children and Families; Theresa Cardinal Brown, managing director of immigration and cross-border policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center; Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda, associate professor at UCLA; and Alex Nowrasteh, director of economic and social policy at the Cato Institute. 

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The House Oversight and Reform Committee will hold a hearing to examine whether climate pledges made by fossil fuel companies Exxon, Chevron, Shell and BP are adequate to address global warming. The committee will hear testimony from Michael E. Mann, professor at the Pennsylvania State University; Mark vaan Ball, founder of Follow This; and Tracey Lewis, policy counsel at Public citizen; among other witnesses yet to be announced. 

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The Brookings Institution will host a webinar focusing on an inclusive public policy agenda for Black Americans. Brookings scholars will assess the president’s progress on his campaign promises and discuss topics such as access to quality health care, housing, jobs, and education, police and criminal justice reform, reparations for Black Americans and voting rights. Speakers include: Brookings fellows Camille Busette, Rashawn Ray, Andre M. Perry, Nicol Turner Lee, Makada Henry-Nickie and Keon L. Gilbert. 

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The House Science, Space and Technology Committee will hold a hearing on data challenges impacting human trafficking research and development of anti-trafficking technological tools. The committee will hear testimony from Gretta Goodwin, director of homeland security and justice at the U.S. Government Accountability Office; Lousie Shelley, professor at George Mason University; Theresa Harris, interim program director of the Scientific Responsibility, Human Rights and Law program at the  American Association for the Advancement of Science; and Hannah Darnton, associate director of ethics, human rights and technology at the Business for Social Responsibility. 

Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on responding to and learning from the Log4Shell vulnerability. The committee will hear testimony from David Nalley, president of the Apache Software Foundation; Brad Arkin, senior vice president and chief security and trust officer of Cisco Systems, Inc.; Jen Miller-Osborn, deputy director of threat intelligence of Unit 42 at Palo Alto Networks; and Trey Herr, director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative at the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council. 

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings will host an event to discuss the evolving relationship between Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The event will feature Ranj Alaaldin, nonresident fellow at the Center for Middle East Policy; Kenneth M. Pollack, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute; Bruce Riedel, Brookings senior fellow; and Katherine Harvey, Adjunct Professor at the Center for Security Studies at Georgetown University. 

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.: The House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization will hold a hearing on IT infrastructure modernization. The subcommittee has not yet released a witness list. 

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022 at 10:00 a.m: The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the legal and human costs of 20 years of U.S. drone strikes. The committee has not yet released a witness list. 

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022 at 2:30 p.m.: The Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Subcommittee on Near East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism will hold a hearing to examine the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and the U.S. response. The subcommittee will hear testimony from David Miliband, president and chief executive officer of the International Rescue Committee; and Graeme Smith, senior consultant at the International Crisis Group. 

Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.: The Wilson Center will host a conversation with State Minister Tobias Lindner of Germany’s Foreign Office about Germany’s position in the stand-off between Russia and Ukraine, coordination within NATO, potential sanctions, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz’ visit at the White House. The conversation will be moderated by Amb. Mark Green, president, director and CEO of the Wilson Center; and Hope M. Harrison, professor at the George Washington University. 

Friday, Feb. 11, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.: The Atlantic Council will host a conversation with the U.S. ambassadors to NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Ambs. Julianne Smith and Michael Carpenter will join PBS NewsHour’s Nick Schifrin to discuss how the United States is working with multilateral organizations like the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and NATO to respond to the security crisis in Europe and the strategic aims of US diplomatic efforts.

Friday, Feb. 11, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.: The Wilson Center will host a panel discussion on how to avert economic collapse in Afghanistan. The panel will feature Khisrow Fazli, CEO of Ghazanfar Bank; Julia Friedlander, former senior policy advisor at the U.S. Treasury Department; Khalid Payenda, former Afghan finance minister; Khalil Sediq, former governor of the Central Bank of Afghanistan; Earl Anthony Wayne, former ambassador to Afghanistan, Argentina and Mexico; and Michael Kugelman, deputy director and senior associate for South Asia at the Wilson Center.
