Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution hosted an event to discuss and examine the one year anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from and Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. The event featured remarks from Wesley Morgan, author of “The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan’s Pech Valley;” Vanda Felbab-Brown, senior fellow at Brookings; and Bruce Riedel, senior fellow at Brookings. The discussion was moderated by Madiha Afzal, fellow at Brookings.
Monday Sept. 12, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event to analyze next generation technologies and the security of democratic societies. The event will feature three panel discussions. The first panel will discuss “how to win an information competition;” the second panel will examine advanced military technologies in the U.S. China competition; and the third panel will analyze digital authoritarianism and malicious actors.
Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host an event to discuss the climate crisis. The event will feature remarks from Carnegie President Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar and New York Times writer David Wallace-Wells about the state of the climate crisis and how the United States, China, and Europe can reduce their disproportionate impacts on the emergency.
Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. ET: The Wilson Center will host an event to discuss women and the African peace and security agenda. The event is part of the 2022 Southern Voices Network for Peacebuilding Annual Conference, “Business Unusual: A Rapidly Changing World Calls for Adapting Peacebuilding in Africa.” The event will feature remarks from Miriam Mukalazi, visiting researcher at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security, and Christopher Isike, professor of African politics and international relations at the University of Pretoria.
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Brookings Institution will host an event to discuss how homosexuality shaped politics and foreign policy in Washington, D.C. The event will feature remarks from James Kirchick, former Brookings visiting fellow and author of the book “Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington;” Jonathan Rauch, Brookings senior fellow; and Lucas F. Schleusener, chief executive officer of Out in National Security. The panel discussion will be moderated by Suzanne Maloney, vice president and director of Foreign Policy at Brookings.
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. ET: The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing to examine the future of U.S.-Taiwan trade. The committee has yet to release a witness list.
Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. ET: The Atlantic Council will host a conversation with Martin Fayulu, former presidential candidate in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fayulu will discuss his vision and expectations for the region. The event will be moderated by Carol Van Dam Falk, International Broadcaster at Voice of America, and Robbie Gramer, diplomatic reporter at foreign policy. It will be moderated by Rama Yade, senior director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council.
Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. ET: The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Innovation will hold a hearing to examine securing U.S. industrial control systems against cyberattacks. The subcommittee will hear testimony from Eric Goldstein, executive assistant director for cybersecurity at the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Vergle Gipson, senior advisor at the Cybercore Integration Center at the Idaho National Laboratory.
Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. ET: The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host a panel conversation to discuss Italy’s political future. Panelists include: Dan Baer, senior vice president for policy research at Carnegie; Rosa Balfour, director of Carnegie Europe; Hannah Roberts, freelance reporter working in Italy; and John R. Phillips, former U.S. ambassador to Italy and San Marino.
